Gwen Pritchard Ceramic Boats

(1 products)

"I became interested in ceramics in the early 90's and attended Newcastle-Under-Lyme College recreational classes learning various making and glazing techniques. Several years ago I started working from my studio at home. I mostly work in terracotta building pots and boats from slab work. The making process starts by forming a cardboard template to the design required. Raw clay is then rolled out between two strips of wood to an even thickness; the clay is then cut to the shape of the template and left to dry until leather hard. The cut shapes are then joined together using slip and then the whole piece is allowed to dry naturally for approximately one week before being sanded down prior to a bisque firing at 1050°. Decoration is then applied using three coats of brush on glaze before firing a second time at 1015°."
